‘East Meets West’ is a research project run by the German Department at the University of Bristol. It explores how people with firsthand experiences of state socialism remember their past and compare it to their experiences of living in the UK. The research focuses on post-socialist communities living in Bristol and the surrounding area.

People taking part in the project have the opportunity to share their experiences and stories at a series of social events, as well as on this website. Anyone who lives in or around Bristol and has experienced state socialism is very welcome to participate. Simply send an email to socialismeyewitnesses@gmail.com, and we will send you further information about the project.

The website will be regularly updated with individuals’ stories and experiences, as well as with photos and video clips from our social events. It would be great to hear any feedback or comments on our posts, so please keep an eye on the website and feel free to share your views.

We look forward to hearing from you!

Hi, I’ve only now became aware of this project. I’m from East Germany and have lived in Bristol for nearly 10 years. So, very interested in this. 🙂 I know your first meeting is Thurs 22 March which I’m not able to attend. Please do send me more information.
    Many thanks.
